The Scottish Solar Index
What solar panels actually produce in Scotland — real generation data from monitored systems, reported honestly, with sample sizes stated openly.
Quick answer
The Scottish Solar Index will publish what solar panels actually generate on real Scottish roofs, using daily output from monitored systems grouped by region, orientation and system size. Every figure will show its sample size. MCS zone data suggests roughly 700 to 810 kWh per kWp annually around Glasgow; the Index will test that.

ORIGINAL RESEARCH
What solar panels actually produce in Scotland — measured from real roofs, reported honestly, with sample sizes and limitations stated openly.
Why does real Scottish solar data matter?
Most Scottish solar claims are estimates. The Scottish Solar Index measures what panels actually produce on real Scottish roofs.
Every solar company in Scotland sells opinions about what solar produces here. Nobody publishes measurements. The Scottish Solar Index will be different: real generation data from monitored Scottish systems, broken down by region, orientation and system size, with the sample size (n) printed alongside every figure.
How is the Scottish Solar Index measured?
Daily kWh output from monitored systems is aggregated by region, orientation and size, using only complete calendar months.
Generation data is collected from systems monitored through our maintenance programme. Each contributing system records daily kWh output via its inverter monitoring platform. We aggregate by region, orientation and system size. Only complete calendar months are counted. Systems with known faults during the reporting period are excluded.
We will publish: the median annual yield per kWp, the interquartile range, the sample size, and the specific exclusions. We will not publish figures where the sample is too small to be meaningful — and we will say so.
What do we expect the data to show?
Real-world yield is typically lower than MCS zone estimates due to shading, orientation and inverter clipping.
MCS MIS 3002 zone data suggests approximately 700–810 kWh of generation per kWp installed, annually, for the Glasgow area. Real-world yield is typically lower due to shading, orientation, soiling and inverter clipping. The Index will quantify how much lower, and whether the gap varies by region.
How can I contribute my solar data?
Call or email us with your system size, postcode area and monitoring platform. All data is anonymised before publication.
If you have a solar system in Scotland and would like to contribute your generation data to the Index, we would welcome your participation. Your data is anonymised — we publish aggregate figures only, never individual systems.
To register interest, call 0141 230 0198 or email info@scottishenergyefficiency.co.uk with your system size, location (postcode area only) and monitoring platform.
Honesty statement
An honest empty index dated today is better than a fabricated full one. The first edition publishes when the sample is large enough to mean something. We will never publish a figure the sample does not support, and we will always print n.
